A$AP Rocky – Testing Review

This is a release that is the definition of just okay. There are some good things about it but it has too many pitfalls to shine out.

The production is interesting as there is a lot of experimentation in the beats. However it doesn’t break any ground and a lot of them are overbearing in comparison the the rhymes. There are too many backings here that are too far from what people are aiming to hear that there are a lot of missable tracks.

The lyricism is good but there is not enough smart wordplay for it to bring this project out of the mud. What Rocky says entertaining, but his performance gets lost as his delivery is overpowered by the production. This needed stronger delivery to have pretty much any impact on the listener.

The features all do a good job of putting across their skills and are the highlights of these songs. All of their contributions are the highlights of the tracks they are on as well as the best thing about this album. Hopefully Rocky can take lessons from them and improve his own efforts.

Overall, this is a failure for Rocky, but he should still be commended for his efforts. It is important that efforts go into experimentation for progress to happen and there are bound to be mistakes along the way, but without mistakes there would be no lessons learned.

A$AP Mob – Cozy Tapes, Vol 1: Friends Review

This project definitely has the cohesive feel that comes with people who are close making music. It is a shame that a lot of the songs are in the same vein, but they are done well.

The production is good and really punctuates the rhymes with the amount of emotions somehow crammed in. Each beat has a lot of similarities, which can often happen with total in house production, but they are all effective in getting the energy across. A few more variations on the beats wouldn’t hurt but all the backings are still very much enjoyable.

The lyricism is entertaining and the different delivery of each Mob member helps keep things fresh as the project plays out. A lot of solid bars are scattered throughout the album, but there is the odd miss step which is quickly covered up with another rhyme. A bit more consistency would make this flow just a little easier.

The features are good with some big names keeping things moving. Each puts in a good verse or uses their signature talents to bring their own flavour to the songs. Some singing could lighten up this project full of deeper tones and noises.

Overall, this project is a good showing of each of the members abilities and how well they work together. It will be interesting to see how they progress with future endeavours.

A$AP Rocky – AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP Review

This album has a lotof the same elements as his previous effort that was a big hit with audiances and this should be also. While there arent any outragously club or party tracks, it is all heartfelt and enjoyable to a majority of listeners.

The production is excellent and all comes together to help showcase Rocky’s skills. Each beat has a different feel while some may appear similar, but if the listener pays the slightest amount of attention, the differences are clear and help show how cohesive this project is. Bringing some more energetic music into it may help to create a more all round project but Rocky has done well to keep his individual tastes through his beat selection.

The lyricism is good and helps to take what Rocky is saying and show the message clearly to the listener. Rocky has done well to improve upon what he had when it came to technical skills and to keep the level of lyricism to a good standard. On the other hand it is not as complicated as it could be, to attract the elitest lyrical listeners, but Rocky is effective with his rhymes.

The features are all effective on thier tracks and help to build up the level of cohesion on the project. Each guest is selected to work perfectly with the beat they are on and this helps each of them to produce verses to rival Rockys own. Some guests to open Rocky up to a wider selection of genres may make tracks to appeal to an even wider audiance, however that may not have made this an easy listen for Hip Hop purists.

Overall, this album has built on the success of Rockys previous efforts and has shown growth as an artist. Rocky should use this momentum to build up more of A$AP Mob and to take his brand to new heights.

A$AP Ferg – Ferg Forever Review

This is a very confusing project. It attempts to show Ferg’s diversity and it does show what he can do on a number of different styles of beats, which it does. However, what needs to be speculated is how well he does on each track. Sometimes the song falls short of success but other time he shines through and the production fits well with the lyricism.

The production is good but does not all necessarily fit with Ferg’s style. There are many different types of beats on this project ranging in speed, instruments and pitch and each creates a different feel for each song. The only thing to take into consideration is that maybe Ferg stretched himself a bit thin with so many different types that it takes from the project as a whole.

The lyricism is there but is not a main factor in this mixtape. While it does play a role, Ferg changes his delivery and flow so many times that those changes become more of a focal point than the actual lyrics. While you can take the lyricism as a main focal point, and there is some really good lyricism mixed in there, it can become easy to lose yourself in the mixture of other project components.

The features can be good but can also be too similar to Ferg or each other to make too much of an impression. While for each track it may add to how good the track is, but overall doesn’t add to the project.

Overall, this could be a good project if you pick and choose the tracks you like, but if you listen to the project as a whole, it isn’t greatly cohesive and can be hard work to get through all the tracks.
