Various Artists – The Hamilton Mixtape Review

This release is incredible. Everyone knows how great the songs from Hamilton are, and letting these artists re-imagine them shows that they work as more than story telling devices in the show.

The production is great with some of the original Broadway backings used so the artists can give their own impression or interpretation of the originals. Where new songs have been created or tweaked, there are no missteps and actually helps keep the listen through fresh. This is a clever re-imagining of an already successful show and should help bring even more attention to it.

The lyricism is fantastic as Lin-Manuel crafted stunning rhymes from the original used in a lot of the tracks here. The new lines are all amazing with fantastic imagery and passion put into the messages of the songs. These tracks are put together with such a close eye on the precision of the craft that each of these feels almost brand new, despite there already being versions of a lot of them.

The selection of artists on here are fantastic. Each compliments the part they play on here in style and fits the need of the track perfectly. There are no problems at all with these features.

Overall, this is a really incredible showing of not only the talent of the artists, but how to put a release together. Lin-Manuel had a bright future after the musical release, but this will help solidify him as a future for music everywhere.

MED, Blu And Madlib – Bad Neighbor Review

This album is full of great production and plenty of lyrical displays to make a fantastic album. All parties involved in this album should be proud of thier work.

The production is full of noises and sounds that make the beats seem wierd but work very smoothly with the lyrics and performances. Each is individual and there is very little chance of mixing up which track is which. There are no problems with what has been produced here.

The lyricism is relatively fast paced while using a variety of different techniques to make the words interesting. Each of the artists do a good job of mixing different types of wordplay into thier rhymes to make what they are rapping have more impact and creativity. Maybe some changes in performance and delivery could enhance the album slightly but there are definately no gaping holes for improvement.

The features do a good job of giving more depth to the project. The deeper bench brings more flavour and opinions that helps push the main artists to further greatness. Some more guests further from Hip Hop could make a few more exhilarating moments but there are definately no issues with the selection.

Overall, this album is enjoyable to listen to as it is quirky and does not follow the recipe for mainstream success. That being said, it needs people to listen to it for the artists to become better known and receive the recognition they deserve.

Fashawn – The Ecology Review

This is a fantastic album reminiscent of Nas as Fashawn takes a narrative stance throughout the project and creates a great feeling of education through enjoyment of the music. If he stays on a role like this, Fashawn could have a great Hip Hop career.

The production is great and has a wide range that allows Fashawn to explore a large variety of songs and emotions. Energy levels rise and dip appropriately with how the listener should be feeling and helps to create a very cohesive listening experiance. There is not a whole lot that can be critiscised about the beats on thois project as it is clear that Fashawn has a great ear for these things.

The lyricism us clever and enticing to listen to. The wordplay and other lyrical techniques weave a colourful tapestry of imagery that draws you in and really helps to show that Fashawn should be ranked amoung the top lyricists. Again, there is not a whole lot to criticise. Possibly, some more positive tracks could be thrown in but that is pretty much it.

The features are also enjoyable and show how well Fashawn’s style blends with others to create great tracks. A combination of big names and people he has good chemistry with helps to make some great guest verses and some standout tracks. Maybe some more experimental features would better showcase Fashawn’s rapping ability but his choices here are all good choices.

Overall, this is an enjoyable project as well as educational to the listener. Fashawn does a great job putting this album together and if it is an indicator of things to come, he could have a very successful future in the rap game.
