This project is a blend of smooth and soulful beats with passionate rhymes. Apollo Brown works wonders with the boards to make beautiful sounds that lift the rhymes from Ortiz to new heights on the emotional side.
The productions is incredible as Brown sculpts these tracks to amplify the rhymes, especially the emotional content, and keeps to the mission statement of the title, to be beautiful and mysterious just like the famous painting. There are still a few grittier offerings to make a more balanced release, but this is still one of the prettiest productions heard in recent times.
The lyricism is amazing as Joell Ortiz continues his run of lyrical dominance. Ortiz fills his words with emotion as well as true confidence in his words as he goes deep into his feelings and psych for content. Ortiz will continue to stun with his descriptive and storytelling ability if he can continue to push with these efforts.
The decision to only have a couple of features was smart as the project is not particularly long and the artists don’t want to detract from their own efforts. That being said, both the guests do a great job of adding to the songs they are on, with one on the production and the other with vocals. It will be interesting to see who both artists choose to collaborate with in the future with this release behind them.
Overall, this is a very creative album that both artists should be extremely proud of. With a wave of drug promoting, hard hitting records, it is refreshing to see a pair of veterans put their effort into something a little different.
This is a very interesting release as Danny Brown continues his psychedelic and somewhat psychotic approach to his music with results that push the experimental envelope. Fortunately there are some gems in all the confusion that make this a success.
The production is certainly different with a lot of unusual sounds and patterns used to make an unusual feel that helps somewhat to explain the album title. While not conventional beats used as a backing, they do all work with Brown’s style and with the guest appearances. It may not be for everyone, it does prove that making music does not have to be formulaic as it so often is in mainstream Hip Hop.
The lyricism is clever with Danny Brown showing he can write clever lines about a range of subject matter while keeping his signature tone and flow. He works with the range of production to make emotional songs as well as tracks for the recreational drug user and even high energy offerings. Listeners should be able to find rhymes for everyone on this particular project.
The features are good as they don’t fill the project while helping to elevate it to new heights. Brown selects some A-List acts to prove he can rap with the best and does so with gusto. it will be interesting to see who he chooses to work with in the future as he is already close to the Hip Hop elite.
Overall, this is a very entertaining listen because it is so different. Few artists would try something so experimental, or be able to pull it off so well. Danny Brown should be celebrated for even attempting this, let alone for how well he has crafted it.
This album is a great listen through for a more settled down scene that is filled with passion. Apollo provides a great backing that never overpowers the rhymes and chooses those who fit in with his style very well.
The production is smooth and captures the essence of the song perfectly. Most seem to have a more old school feel as they dont rely on alien noises to make them appealing to the young generation. They are more substantial and soothing than that. Apolla puts across his beats well, with enough variation to show he is not stuck to one formula.
The features are good and reflect the style Apollo puts across very well. Each brings a lot of effort and pride with thier rhymes to make the tracks they are on shine out. A lot of them have worked with Apollo before and that shows in the chemistry of thier songs. There are no real issues with the guest selection on here, but Apollo may want to look into people further away from the genre to create even more of a buzz.
Overall, this is a great listen and a fantastic showcase for Apollo Brown’s beats. The way his backings works combined with the selected features molds an album that works well for everyone involved.
