This project is a fantastic introduction to KXNG Crooked for fans before his album drops. Previous fans can get behind the fact that one of the most lyrical rappers in the modern game is still being a rhyme genius and new fans can enjoy the bouncy production while learning what lyricism is.
The production is a sleek west coast affair, with bouncy backings and plenty of energy to help keep the listener interested, especially if they haven’t heard a Crooked song before. Each beat isn’t jarring in anyway and the fluidity of the transitions makes this an easier listening experience instead of being thrown from song to song. With this being only a handful of examples, it will be interesting to see what Crooked has chosen to work with on the full album.
The lyricism is fantastic with Crooked cramming bars into every song but without it sounding forced. Metaphors and similies are strewn throughout but the songs don’t feel overcrowded with rhymes trying to be too clever. The perfect balance is struck between bars and delivery and KXNG Crooked thrives in those moments.
Overall, This is a really great EP for Hip Hop fans everywhere, while knowing it is only a taster for what is to come in a few weeks time. May the album be as good or better than this and it will be in contention for album of the year.
This project is great because it has songs that appeal to a lot of people, but with skits that tie the songs together into a story. Tory Lanez has done well to make songs that can be listened to together as well as individually.
The production is good with a lot of variation in instruments and sounds used. Each song is individual and cant be confused with others on the project. There are no problems with the selection but maybe more traditional instruments would make some more interesting moments.
the lyricism is sporadic but good in general. There are moments of fantastic lyricism and moments where it is average, but when the level of wordplay dips, is when it tends to be more emotionally packed. The only issue is the possible over use of auto tune which runs rampant through the album.
The choice to have no features is good because there are other voices in the skits and it helps to explore his personal narrative. It also gives plenty of space for Lanez to show what he is capable of. Maybe on his next project, he can show how he works with others.
Overall, this is a very enjoyable project with a whole range of tracks. Tory Lanez shows he is definately a Hip Hop power for the modern day.
This album is good if you like the highly energized rap music that pumps out of mainstream radio these days. If you prefer something deeper or more lyrical, there are other options out there for you.
The production is good with plenty of different types of energetic beats, but there are no slow moments. This works fine for the basis of this album as it is DJ led, but should be avoided elsewhere. A few more diverse backings could do well to show that DJ Khaled does not follow a formula, but the concept of this album works for his purpose.
The features all do a good enough job to make the songs enjoyable but there is not a lot of substance. Each guest puts effort into thier verses, but with the same people recurring multiple times doing the same thing, can become stale. Maybe some more variation in guest selection could create some more interesting moments, but at least the songs are not totally boring.
Overall, you will probably like a few songs on this but a full listen through may not be as entertaining to everyone as it might seem. DJ Khaled does show that he can still put together a project however.
While OJ does show more lyrical offerings on this project, it is still clinging to the trap formula to make music. All the tracks come across as extremely similar and there is nothing to set this mixtape apart from the pack.
The production is repetitive and can become extremely stale when listening to the whole project through. The beats use a lot of the same sounds and patterns on each song which makes a dull listening experiance, lifted only by the energy in them. OJ will need to try something new to attract new fans.
The lyricism is improved and helps to make this project bearable. OJ uses more rap devices to embellish his rhymes and attempt to bring in a larger audience. However it is not enough to get the attention of lyrical purists and will continue to need improvement.
Overall, this is a step forward for OJ Da Juiceman but it is a small step and not the leap he needs to climb the Hip Hop ladder. It is good to see OJ looking to move on in his career and not get stuck stagnating.
This album is certainly different from others available at the moment but that may not necessarily be a good thing. The backing is much more relaxed and calm with the lyricism relying on the words and not so much on delivery and this all comes together to make an interesting listen.
The production is very laid back and provides a good base for Earl to showcase his skills. The use of instruments and sounds helps create beats that are more individual than others and make each track more enticing. The main issue is that there is not a lot of energy in each beat and it can feel like the music is not connecting to the listener. However the lyrics help bring it back as enjoyable.
The lyricism is not complex but it is powerful due to the involved nature of most of the tracks. The way the words are put together and the emotional weight they carry help make the lyrics hit harder with the listener. The delivery can come across as flat as Earl does not have a lot of variation in his performance but the words themselves are strong.
The features are good but can be difficult to distinguish from Earl. This detracts from their efforts on each song and doesn’t really show the guests in the best light. If they had been a bit more assertive then they may have stood out a bit more on thier tracks.
Overall, the album is enjoyable to listen to but not for the conventional reasons other albums recently have been enjoyed. The calmer nature of the tracks may not be for everyone but the people who do enjoy them, will enjoy them a lot.
