This album has a great old school west coast feel, but without much binding it together, it just feels like a collection of somewhat passionless tracks. Dom has the ability to make enjoyable songs, but this album does not showcase a great deal of them.
The production is good and is full of elements that resound with the west coast atmosphere. Each track is distinctive but they definately share a lot of the same energy and feel. A few more songs with a different style may break up the monotony, but the songs individually can be entertaining.
The lyricism is not great as Dom Kennedy relies on his delivery and performance to have impact. While the way he says it boosts the tracks, his actual wordplay is fairly straight forward with very little deciphering. a few more intricate schemes would go a long way in his songs.
There is onefeatures on the tracklist which should be good to help Kennedy show his own skills off. However while he does vary his flow a bit during the album, there is a definate monotonous tone that runs through the whole project. A couple of guests more would have broken that up more and made an easier listening experiance. The one feature does do a good job on his track though.
Overall, this is a good album if you like Dom Kennedy making each track the way he wants to make it. Unfortunately he seems to want to make each track in a similar way and this has made a project that is not for everyone.
