Bun B – Return Of The Trill Review

This is a great album from a veteran artist, showing that he still has a lot of talent behind the mic. Bun B has crafted a release that will resonate with a lot of listeners as having a lot of classic feel, but with a modern twist.

The production is great and works extremely well with Bun B’s rap style and tone. There is a lot of flavour in each beat and each backing creates the right atmosphere for the song. Maybe a few more softer offerings could make this feel a little more complete for some, but this is still a great listen when it comes to the production.

The lyricism is great, not the most complicated, but very enjoyable. Bun B has a unique vocal tone that exacerbates the impact of the rhymes and makes them much more entertaining. A little more experimentation with flow and complexity could show a little more willing to grow as an artist, but Bun B has certainly carved out his own lane here.

The features are great as each does a great job of showing their own capabilities as well as adding to the cohesiveness of the track list. All the guests fit perfectly into the song they are on and only bring positives to this project. It is possible that a few moresingers could add another dimension, but the guests on here are exactly what was needed for these particular songs.

Overall, this is one of the strongest releases of the year so far. Bun B has done a truly fantastic job creating this album and hopefully listeners will recognize that.

Big Boi – BOOMIVERSE Review

This is a great release from Big Boi as it is smooth and does encompass every listener with one play through. Something for everyone and high levels of cohesion have built this up into a top quality product.

The production is fantastic as each beat is strong and can stand on its own, while leaving room for the artists to work and not encroach on their space. You also get the feeling of outer space and the expanse as each song plays and really helps link back to the title. Maybe something with a little grit could appeal more to the more aggressive listener, but the selection here is outstanding.

The lyricism is excellent with Big Boi utilising his clever rhymes with a fast flow to create interesting and enjoyable performances on each song. It could be argued that the actual raps aren’t overly complex and could be more intricate, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t effective and impactful. Something slower may show a more complete balance of skills, but Big Boi only does good work on this project.

The features all help to lift this to new heights as they each put in great performances. Everyone does some of their best work on this album and none feel out of place. Maybe something a little further from the comfort zone of Hip Hop would make more interesting moments, but the guests on this help keep things feeling fresh.

Overall, BOOMIVERSE is a success and is definitely worth a spin. Big Boi should continue to explore his musical skills like this and expand his repertoire of artists he has worked with, as he has done here.

Pimp C – Long Live The Pimp Review

This is a great album for that signiture southern sound as well as the content Pimp C is known for. May he rest in peace knowing this album is enjoyable and entertaining.

The production is full of the deep south and there are no complications about it wanting to sound otherwise. The beats all have that bounce to give it that energy that Pimp C thrives off of while not sounding similar and still sounding diverse. There are no issues with the selection on here as it only brings strength to this project.

The lyricism may not be complex but the delivery and performance is amazing which really boosts the songs. The humour and unique content perspective really help give this a unique edge that makes it stand out against the other projects releasing at the same time. The rhymes on this are definately only a good thing for the rap game.

The features help fill the space in the songs with equally enjoyable verses. Pimp C has a whole host of great stars jump on these tracks to help make them amazing songs and finish this album up. Maybe some singers could give this more of a balance but there are no issues with who has got on it.

Overall, this album is very good for fans of Pimp C and southern Hip Hop. With plenty of interesting moments to keep listeners coming back, Pimp C would be proud of this project if he was here to see it.
