Big Scoob – Duality Review

The title aptly prepares the listeners for the tracks on this release. Big Scoob is a man of two extremes with gritty street tracks and much softer tracks , but with no middle ground on the spectrum.

The production is fantastic with a lot of variation in atmosphere, depending on how he is trying to come across on that song. The aggression is clear when it needs to be as well as things getting more emotional as Scoob needs it to. Maybe something a little more radio ready while having a tough edge would give Scoob more exposure, but he does well over these beats.

The lyricism is great, with the fast pace helping to show how talented Scoob is. He uses wordplay and alliteration especially well and his tone giving his delivery an extra edge. There is also good variation with flow and some light attempts at singing to help give another dimension to Big Scoob.

The features all do a great job of adding their own skills to the project. Some help lend their talents to the hooks with their singing while others lend even more authenticity to the album. There are no issues with the guest selection here as all they do is build on this album.

Overall, this is a top release from a talented artist. Big Scoob has done very well crafting this and can hopefully capitalise off this and get more of the recognition that he deserves.

Tech N9ne – Planet Review

This release shows that while Rap may be a younger mans game, some titans work ethic will prevail. Tech N9ne has put the work in for a lot of years and with his twentieth release, returns to some of the best rhyming of his life.

The production is great with a lot of energy and perfect atmosphere where needed. Each song has a beat that responds well to the overall message being sent by the artists and helps build a cohesive listen. This selection of backings lends itself to a variety of content that stops the release becoming stale.

The lyricism is, unsurprisingly, sharp as ever. Tech N9ne doesn’t miss a trick and fills this project with clever lines and punches that show he has worked hard on his craft which has made him the number one independent rapper in the world. It is great to see him living up to that title.

The features all do a great job of helping to flesh this out and make it stand tall. Every one of them shows their particular skill sets and does the job that helps build the track they are on as well as keeping a high level of chemistry. A few more singers could have brought that dimension more to the foreground but there is still a good balance of guests overall.

In conclusion, this is a great album. Sure there are a few missteps, but no artist is perfect and Tech N9ne is as close as any other rapper when it comes to technical ability as well as core followings.

Murs – A Strange Journey Into The Unimaginable Review

This release is an excellent example of how to turn around a horrid point in life. After what Murs has been through, it shows incredible strength to not only stay a functioning person but to also be able to use it in their music? not many can utilise pain in this way, especially in such a cohesive and poignant album.

The production, handled exclusively by Michael “Sevens” Summers, fits perfectly with what Murs is saying on each song. The chemistry between this producer and rapper is crystal clear every second of this project and keeps it flowing nicely. With the wide variation of vibes here, there is not a lot that could be worked on.

The lyricism is amazing, with Murs showing his wordplay and also great story telling skills. Every line is crafted to work perfectly with the beat as well as the overall messages on the songs. Maybe a little more flow experimentation could make a little more excitement but there is no doubt that these are some fantastic performances from a true wordsmith.

The features all help to keep this fresh with additional voices to break up any monotony. All have top skills of their own and keep the quality high with their contributions. There is a slim chance that some more singers could give another softer edge, but Murs handles that on his own with the content.

Overall, this is a really amazing album that explores a lot of different feelings and shows that it is possible to keep living after a tragic event. Hopefully Murs continues to work on his music and personal issues so hip hop can continue to recieve these gifts of his.

JL – DIBKIS Review

This release is a great showing of skills for JL and helps put his name into the public eye. Each track shows a lot of talent from the artist and how he is developing in his music.

The production is energetic and dark in a lot of places. There are a lot of songs with deep atmospheres to delve into and helps to connect with the listener. Maybe some more lighter beats could help give a more balanced experience but this is still a great backdrop for the stylings of JL.

The lyricism is amazing with a lot of clever wordplay and fast paced rhymes to keep things interesting and exciting. JL does a great job of displaying a variety of abilities through out the songs, but his hooks can be a little repetitive. However, that is the only real issue with his performance on here.

The features do great of expanding upon JL’s performance to increase the entertainment value of each song. All the guests did a great job of showing how well they can rap and/or sing, and help build this project up to an even higher level. The guest selection on here fill the criteria but maybe something further from his comfort zone could add another dimension.

Overall, this is a very deep project that connects with the listener while giving them an energy boost to their day. JL is a fantastic member of Strange Music and proves it with this album.

Tech N9ne Collabos – Dominion Review

This album is fantastic as it shows that every member of Strange Music is not only talented, but works extremely well with the other members. Tech N9ne has built a strong house and will only continue to be a powerhouse in the rap game.

The production is incredible with a huge range of different beats to allow for an extremely diverse set of tracks. The backings each create the perfect atmosphere for the type of song that they are as well as blending together with a top level of cohesion. There are no problems with the production here and Strange Music should continue with this mentality.

The lyricism is amazing with every artist showing that they are as talented as their leader. Tech leads the way with plenty of examples of top quality wordplay and the rest of his troops fall in line with their own stunning displays. Each artist here does a really magnificent job here and proves that Strange music makes strong decisions about who they sign.

Overall, with every artist here being a guest and doing a great job, this release may be a bit of a long slog to the end, but the end result stays fresh with the switching artists making things interesting. The house that Tech N9ne built is a strong one and only continues to get stronger.

Tech N9NE – The Storm Review

This is a lengthy release from Tech, but each song is entertaining. They might not all work as a full album listen through, but individually, these are good songs.

The production is great with plenty of energy keeping the album buzzing. Each beat makes a great atmosphere for the type of song which helps keep the listener interested. Maybe a few more slow tracks could give more of a balanced feel, but it may not fit with Tech’s particular style.

The lyricism is fantastic with some of the best wordplay this year. Tech bends words to his will as he crafts bar full of multi-syllable schemes as well as every other lyrical device. His flow may be a little fast for everyone, but it makes very entertaining tracks.

The features are good as they help keep tracks fresh considering how long this project is. Each puts in a great effort that shows the chemistry that the Strange Music roster has with each other. There is a good balance of rap and singing, but a few more artists who are singers could give a little more depth.

Overall, this is a good release from Tech N9NE but it is not as cohesive as his previous albums. While he does more than good work on this, a bit more direction could ave stream lined this a bit more.

KXNG Crooked -Good Vs. Evil Review

This album is full of all the things listeners love about KXNG Crooked. He is focused and that keeps his work sharp and following the theme of this project.

The production is great with the atmosphere reflecting exactly the message of the tracks. The beats are all dark to reflect the subject matter but are smooth enough to transition easily between the songs without becoming muddled together. Maybe something more light hearted could show another side of Crooked, but he excels on these tracks, so no one will be too bothered.

The lyricism is some of the best that has been released in recent years. Crooked uses some intensely descriptive and clever wordplay to make a project laced with absolute bars. His style might not be for everyone, but his rhymes should suit all.

The features are good as they help add a little more depth to this album. Each may not be in it for very long, but the fact they contributed is more than enough with some legends showing enough respect to this west coast MC that he is brought to some listeners attention at all. The way this is put together with the guests is great as they don’t control the project, just gently shape it.

Overall, this album is great to listen to from top to bottom, as long as you can get on board with the concept. KXNG Crooked is one of the best lyricists out there and should be respected by all hip hop fans as such.
