This is a very enjoyable album with a good mixture of great production and complex lyricism. Both members of Blackalicious have done a great job on thier fields which combined with thier chemistry to make a really stand out project.
The production is fantastic and captures the tone of the content perfectly. Each of the beats is individual and does not run into any other. At the end of some somgs, there are powerful skits to add a stronger message to the tracks. There are no issues with the backing on here, but it would be interesting to see what Gab would do over different beats.
The lyricism s complex and fast paced to make very entertaining rhymes. Gab does a fantastic job of wrapping clever and witty ideas around intense wordplay to make songs with an important message that are hugely entertaining. There are no issues with this lyrical display and it has been shown to stand the test of time from previous projects.
The features do a good job of adding more depth to the album. Each does a good job on the track they are on while enhancing the Blackalicious vibe. Maybe some more varied guests could widen thier audiance, but the chemistry on this works very well.
Overall, this is a great album that will have listeners wanting the next two installments to come out sooner than planned. Both members of Blackalicious should continue to keep working with the ideas that mad ethis to keep thier success going.
This mixtape, while being cohesive and extremely replayable, does have a slight downside. That being that while DJ Mustard does a great job on the backing, the actual talent from his roster can come across as very similar to each other in ability and style.
The production is excellent and definately has the DJ Mustard signiture sound all over it. All the beats are really smooth and flow together without merging. There is pretty much no improvements to make to the production on here as DJ Mustard crafts near perfection.
The features do a good job fleshing out these tracks but there are a lot of similarities in the recurring guests. All of them bring good verses that are diverse enough to be enjoyable, however thier style and lyrical prowess all tend towards the same things which is not in your face obvious, but it does show itself to be true.
Overall, this is an entertaining and laidback listening experiance with DJ Mustard showcasing not only his beat making prowess, but what his record label is capable of. His crew bring a good skill level to this mixtape to take forward to thier own projects.
This album is a great showing of how independant artists can be successful without bending to mainstream pressure. Hopsin has put together an album that seperates himself from the pack of independant artist and puts him on top.
The production is excellent and is tailored exclusively to Hopsin’s style and needs. There is a lot of diversity in the beats to allow a lot of different content which gives the project such balance. Maybe a few more high energy tracks would have helped balance it out more, but on a personal album like this, it may not have fitted with the aim.
The lyricism is fantastic as Hopsin once again showcases his incredible talents. He utilises a lot of different techniques, mostly multi syllable schemes, to really bolster his imagery and story telling ability. With his variety in delivery and flow, there is no obvious way to improve this side of the album.
The features are good and really help to add depth to this project. Each brings a good verse to the track they are on and this really helps with the story telling from another point of view. A singing feature could have added another dimension, however Hopsin has a lot of that under raps most of the time anyway.
Overall, this is a very enjoyable album that is going to rejuvenate his fanbase to another bought of absolute loyalty. Hopsin should be congratulated on his effort here and to bounce back from an album that he thought was subpar.
This is another great throwback project from Snoop Dogg. This time he links up with Tha Dogg Pound, Daz Dillinger and Kurupt for those who arent aware, to create a G-Funk sounding project to kick back to. It recreates the G-Funk era perfectly while also incorporating their journeys and newer inspirations, like Snoops recent foray into reggae. That combined with the great chemistry the three of them has helps to create a good sense of cohesiveness.
The lyricism is present on not only every track, but by every artist. None of the three let down with their lyrics and they flow into each others style very easily. They each not only have their signature style and flows, but it is rare to find a group of individuals that sound not only different from each other but from most if not all other rap acts out there. Snoop especially shines through his diversity, being able to add the reggae flavour for a slightly different atmosphere.
The production is diverse with some freestyles over popular new tracks, some old songs they did together and some entirely new songs. The backing ranges from reggae to Hip Hop to even pop sometimes, which is a new direction for Tha Dogg Pound.
With the features only being when the trio jump on someone elses track, this helps to create a more cohesive project that showcases their talents on tracks picked for others.
Overall, this is a great project if your a fan of the rappers or a fan of the era, but it may not attract new fans as it doesn’t contain any of the factors that may make it considered “popular” but it is a fantastic project for kicking back and enjoying a great era of Hip Hop.
